Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD scholarship tenable in the Department of Anaesthetics, Emergency Medicine and ICU at the University of New South Wales. The successful applicant will work, under the supervision of Dr. T. V. Nguyen and Dr. K. M. Hillman, as part of a team investigating the effectiveness of a model of medical organisation on health outcomes such as hospital mortality, incidence of cardiac arrest, and cost-benefit.
The applicant will conduct research at the Simpson Centre for Health Service Innovation, Liverpool Hospital. The Centre - comprised of critical care specialists, primary care physicians, epidemiologists, informatics experts and social scientists - actively engages in health service research and large scale epidemiological studies. The Centre's research is driven by concrete applications, specifically the need for developing health indicators. We envisage a strong applied-methodological collaboration between the School of Health Economics and our Department.
Applicants should have (or expect to obtain in 2000) a Master's degree or the equivalent of a good (First class or Upper Second class) Honours degree in health economics, econometrics, a good background in applied statistics or epidemiology, and an interest in empirical modelling of health outcomes. Applicants should also have good research background, and good written and oral communication skills.
The scholarship will provide an annual support of AUD $20,000 (tax-free) for a full-time PhD student for three years. Funding will also be available for attendance at Australian conferences to present the results of the research.
