Workshop
One: No Fancy Mustard Please, Just The Basics!
Goals: Today you’re going to
write a simple Web page using HTML, put it in your Web folder, and play around
with some basic commands controlling page appearance.
Rationale: Although the underlying
code in WWW documents is increasingly a matter for serious Web designers alone,
you will benefit from having a sense of what makes your page look the way it
does, and gain an appreciation of how a few simple commands can organize so
many pixels!.
Read
through the entire exercise before you do anything else!
Step
One: You’ll
find the tutorial you’ll complete at the link below. DON”T GO THERE YET. KEEP
READING!!! Do the practice exercise, then try out some of the other basic tags
and see how they transform your page.
I'd
then like you to try to do the following: put an image on your page and wrap
text around it (ask me how to get an image if you don’t know); change the
background colour to black and the font colour of your text to red; put in a
hyperlink to the 408c Web page; make an ordered list of what you did on your
last summer vacation; make a portion of your text blink (so that you'll see why
you'll likely never want to use this tag again!).
But before you do any of
that, you need to set up your workspace. Open the Notepad function under
“Accessories” in your Start menu. Try to organize your screen so that Notepad
occupies the left half and Navigator the right. This way, you’ll be able to
follow the instructions and type your text into Notepad at the same time.
Step
Two: After
you feel comfortable with HTML (!), it’s time to ensure that you can put your
saved Web pages on the server. Follow the other link, and read the instructions
pertinent to your task.
Step
Three: If
you get all this done early and want to continue, try playing around with Web
Weaver (it’s on the Start menu). This HTML editor is actually a handy way to
both speed your tagging and learn HTML at the same time.
Step
Four: See you next week!
