ALBERTI MAGNI E-CORPUS :

CORRECTIONS MADE TO THE PRINTED EDITIONS

Producing more accurate and definitive editions of Albert’s works is a task that belongs to the Albertus-Magnus-Institut (which performs it with great seriousness and competence) and that has never been part of the Alberti Magni e-corpus project. However, errors in the printed editions that constitute its machine-readable corpus often represent a serious obstacle to the efficiency of electronic searches. In order to partly alleviate that problem, the most obvious and easily identified of those errors have been corrected. Approximately 6 thousand such corrections have been made (within a corpus of about 19.2 thousand pages), and it is hoped that all or at least the almost totality of them are justified, even though they are not based on the reading of any manuscript. The search engine is configured is such a way that both faulty and corrected forms are easy to notice (faulty forms appearing in brown and corrected ones in green in the search results) and also that both forms are actually searched by the engine.

In general, an error to be corrected is here understood as some material part of a text that is not conform to what the editor intended it to be. Thus, the vast majority of the corrections that have been made fall into the following sub-categories :

1) Very uncontroversial corrections to punctuation and quotation marks.

2) Some editors, in particular Borgnet, attempt to uniformize spelling, but sometimes forget their own spelling conventions. When it was clear that spelling conventions were supposed to have been systematically applied, discrepancies have been corrected. (Note that many editors follow spelling conventions that are other than Borgnet’s, do not seek the same degree of uniformization, or in general want to reflect the diversity of forms found in manuscripts. This also represents a problem for electronic searches, but it was decided not to eliminate those intended variations.)

3) All editions contain mere typos and an attempt has been made to correct all of those. (Such errors probably form the bulk of those that have been corrected.) The identification of typos is of course a more dangerous enterprise when the editor of a text did not intend to uniformize spelling, and consequently much less corrections of that nature have been made in those cases.

4) Borgnet’s edition attempts, grosso modo, to reproduce the text of the Jammy edition. It happens from time to time that a spelling error in Jammy is blindly reproduced in Borgnet, or that a word or passage in Jammy is simply misread, thus introducing a spelling mistake that was not there originally. (A certain prudence is here required, as Borgnet was not meant to be a perfectly exact copy of Jammy either.)

Note also that the format of the different section labels of a text has been uniformized in order to facilitate the work of the search engine, but that those changes are NOT identified on the screen. Thus, Caput unicus has been replaced with Caput I; TRACTATUS SECUNDUS with TRACTATUS II; punctuation has been uniformly applied; etc.

Note, finally, that corrections made to Borgnet’s text are always confirmed by the Jammy edition, unless otherwise indicated.
